Suspended Traditional Ruler nabbed for alleged fraud, impersonation

Men of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ondo State Police command, Akure on Saturday
arrested the suspended traditional ruler of Igburowo community, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Pius Akinfesola Adewola, over alleged offences ranging from impersonation, forgery, stealing and fraud.

The Monarch whose title was given as Akamuja of Igburowo was alleged to have impersonated staff of Odigbo Local Government and
duped the council some money amounting to several millions of naira.

It was gathered that the state Police Command in Akure arrested the suspected Monarch in Ondo town, following a petition written to the Ondo State Commissioner of police by the people of his community through their counsel, Gabriel Ohre (Esq).

In the said petition, they alleged that the Monarch injected names of some people into the payment voucher of chiefs in the community.

The Petition entitled : “COMPLAINT OF FORGERY, IMPERSONATION, STEALING AND FRAUD OF A SUM OF 16M AGAINST OBA PIUS ADEWOLA” reads below “Some appointed High Chiefs and chiefs of Igburowo Community who are entitled to allowances payable to each of them in their respective names by the Odigbo Local Government of Ondo State.

“Some of the Late High Chiefs and chiefs who died since 2002, still have their names listed in payment voucher for payment of allowances to chiefs of Igburowo community by Oba Pius Adewola with the conspiracy of the four other suspects.

“The existing chiefs whose names reflect in the payment voucher for chiefs allowance for Igburowo community are denied access to the allowances, while Oba Pius Adewola in collaboration with the suspects forged their signatures, impersonate them and stole their respective allowances.

“Also touching are the Late Chiefs since 2002, whose names were retained in the voucher by the Oba while their signatures were forged, they were impersonated, money meant for them stolen and diverted into the personal pocket of the Oba and Odigbo Local Government was defrauded of the amount , for these reasons the monarch refuses to appoint new chiefs to replace the dead ones.”

When contacted over the matter, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) Mr. Wole Ogodo, a Deputy Superintended of Police, (DSP) confirmed the arrest of the Monarch, adding that investigation has begun on the matter.

He said the suspect would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is completed on the matter.
