Suicide Attack in Maiduguri: 11 Dead, 21 Injured

No fewer than 11 persons have been reportedly killed and 21 others injured after Boko Haram suicide bombers attacked three separate locations in Maiduguri on Tuesday night, witnesses and officials said, Wednesday.
Though the police and the military have not spoken on the explosions, the Chairman of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Satomi Ahmed, said that 11 persons died in the blasts, including the suicide bombers.
At about 10 p.m., suspected Boko Haram members attacked Maiduguri from three separate locations along the southern axis.
An official of the Civilian JTF, Abubakar Isa, said that the attacks were carried out by male suicide bombers.
“They were male suicide bombers”, he said.
“One of the suicide bombers attacked a location not far away from the Federal Road Safety office, then another went off at Jiddari Polo Sabon-Gari and then Mulai area along Maiduguri-Biu road.”
Isa said about 21 persons that were injured in the attacks have been taken to the hospital.
The Borno police spokesperson, Victor Isukwu, said that the commissioner of police would brief the press on the attacks later.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army in its continued fight against Boko Haram terrorism engaged the terrorists in a gunfight killing six of them while arresting a few others.
In a statement by Col Timothy Antigha, who is the deputy director, public relations of 8 task force, he confirmed that the gunfight occurred on Tuesday.
According to the report, the soldiers surprised the terrorists in an area bordering the Lake Chad were they were regrouping and engaged the terrorists in a gun battle.
The statement said: “In continuation of ongoing efforts to rout Boko Haram terrorists in its area of responsibility, troops of 7 Brigade Special Forces, 8 Task Force Division have dislodged terrorists who have been gathering in Dawashi Gari village, in an area bordering the Lake Chad.
“In an engagement this morning, gallant soldiers of the division killed 4 terrorists, while others fled, abandoning their motorcycles, which were recovered and destroyed, to prevent their being used to perpetrate terror on innocent villagers.
“Similarly, as part of the theater wide and ongoing clearance operations, troops of 145 Bn, 5 Brigade, 8 Task Force Division have cleared Gashigar, Asaga, Bukarti and neighbouring villages. In the process, troops made contact with terrorists in Kanama village and killed 2 terrorists, arrested 2 more, while 1 AK 47 riffle, 4 magazines and 4 motorcycles were recovered.”
